Italian phrase meaning "first time". Painting directly in one session with no under-drawing or painting. Usually refers to oil or acrylic painting. a painting technique in which a canvas is completed in one session, often having a thickly applied impasto. The technique was described first  in the 17th Century and widely used in the 19th.
