Aboriginal Art is art created by the
indigenous Australians called Aborigines. Art is a central part of
the life of Australian aborigines and their art is based on their
traditional culture. Aboriginal Art covers a wide variety of mediums
including sculpture, painting, wood carving, ceremonial clothing,
and art found on tools and weapons. In Aboriginal culture art is
used to mark their territory, tell stories, and record history.
The "dreaming" is a term used by Aboriginal people to describe
relations between the natural, spiritual, and moral elements of
the world. Many art works are visual symbols and representations of
the artist's "dreaming". Paints for traditional Aboriginal paintings
were often made from water or saliva mixed with ocher and other
mineral pigments. Ocher was the most important painting material
used traditionally by Aboriginal people. The paintings
were created on their body's, rock faces, walls, or bark with
tools such as sticks, primitive brushes, and with their fingers.
Sometimes paint was applied by the spraying of paint from the
mouth. Once the paint or other medium is applied to
a surface on a object in a ceremony,it was believed to
have the power to transform that object into one with religious
significance.
